An attic cleanout before a San Diego move is a sort, then a carry. Keep items belong on the household inventory. Haul-away items belong on a junk-removal scope. The hatch, the ladder, and the excluded liquids decide whether those two jobs can share a day.

Homeowner and mover at a pull-down attic ladder looking up at stored boxes

Sort keep, donate, and haul-away before anyone climbs

Go up once with a notepad before you request estimates. Label three piles: travels with the household, leaves as a donation, leaves as junk. Holiday bins, old files, and mystery totes all need a pile. “We’ll decide on move day” turns an attic into overtime.

A Clairemont ranch attic, a North Park Craftsman crawl, and a Rancho Bernardo bonus-room loft are different holes. Describe the hatch size, the floor type, and whether you can stand. Don’t call every overhead space an attic if it is a closet.

This is not an insulation, rodent, or air-duct service. Those trades are a different visit. This page is about household goods stored above the living space before a move.

The garage packing guide covers a crowded floor-level store. Use it for the garage. Use this page for the hatch.

Confirm hatch, ladder, and carry-path access

Measure the opening, the ladder, and the first hallway it dumps into. A pull-down ladder in a garage is a different path than a hallway hatch over a stair. Share the measurements with every candidate.

Tell the mover whether the attic is boarded, whether lighting exists, and whether the owner will be on the ladder. Don’t ask a crew to work blind in a space you have not seen.

HOA and building rules still apply if the property is a condo with shared attic access. Ask the manager. No county-wide attic form exists.

City curb rules apply when a truck or junk load sits on a public street. The City of San Diego prohibits double parking, sidewalk parking, and blocking a driveway. Posted signs win.

Separate household moving from junk removal

Keep items go on the household mover’s inventory. Haul-away volume goes on a junk removal scope. Mixing them into one vague “clean the attic” line produces two different quotes you cannot compare.

Junk removal in this market often runs from a $95 single-item minimum to about $550 to $650 for a full truckload. Those are market bands, not a brand price. The independent company writes the actual number.

Ask who packs keep items still in the attic. Packing can sit with the owner, with a packing crew, or with the junk crew for discard-only cartons. Write the split.

Review what movers will not take before you add paint, propane, chemicals, or batteries from the rafters. Those items need their own disposal path.

Name excluded items before move day

Attics collect paint cans, holiday lights, old files, and things nobody wanted to throw away. List anything that might be refused. If you don’t know what a sealed can is, don’t put it on a household truck.

This page does not invent a hazardous-waste fee. The City of San Diego’s household hazardous waste process is the place to confirm drop-off for products the mover will not take. Ask the city, then tell the mover what remains.

Don’t ask a household crew to pull building materials, or to disturb anything that looks like it is part of the house. If you need a building trade, hire that trade.

Compare the same attic scope in writing

Send every candidate the same packet: keep list, haul-away list, hatch measurements, and whether junk removal is included. If one company is quoting a whole-home move and another is quoting an attic haul-away, you are not comparing an attic cleanout.

Ask the company to put these items in writing:

  • Keep items versus haul-away items
  • Hatch and ladder conditions the quote assumed
  • Packing included or excluded
  • Who supplies cartons
  • How extras are approved if more totes appear
  • The legal company name and, for household goods, the BHGS license details

For a California-only household goods portion, verify the carrier in the BHGS Household Mover License Search. Read BHGS consumer information before you sign. Junk removal and household moving can be two companies. That is allowed. It needs two scopes.

Master Movers San Diego matches customers with independent licensed movers. The brand does not climb the hatch and does not haul junk itself.
