Moving into assisted living in San Diego County is a residence handoff, not a smaller version of a house move. The new unit has a size limit, a move-in window, and rules the family did not write. The licensed mover moves the goods the family already chose.
Separate family decisions from mover tasks
Name a family lead before you request estimates. That person decides what furniture fits, what goes to relatives, and what never enters the new unit. The mover does not sort a lifetime of belongings unless a separate, written packing or labor scope says so.
Keep medical, legal, and housing choices with the family and the residence. This page is not medical, legal, or placement advice. It is the physical-move plan once those choices are already in motion.
The senior downsizing checklist covers the weeks of keep, donate, and sell work. This article starts later: the actual move into the residence.
A move into assisted living in this market often runs $700 to $1,800. A full downsize often runs $1,200 to $3,500. Those are market bands, not a quote from this brand and not a facility fee. The licensed mover’s written estimate is the number that counts.
Compare a senior move manager with a moving company if the family still needs help deciding what goes. Those are different trades.
Confirm residence access with the property
Call the assisted living community, not a generic “senior housing” desk. Ask for current move-in hours, loading zone rules, elevator reservations, floor protection, and any certificate of insurance the building wants. Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, La Mesa, and Chula Vista campuses do not share one form. Use the address on the residency agreement.
Ask how large the unit is, and which furniture the community allows. A 1-bedroom assisted living unit will not take a 4-bedroom house. The mover should receive a keep list that already matches the unit, not a whole-house inventory.
Ask whether the community wants the bed set, the dresser placed, and boxes stacked, or whether staff unpack. Placement language should name the rooms the family was assigned. A recliner that fit in a Rancho Bernardo den can fail a measured doorway in a Carlsbad studio unit. Send the unit’s door width if you have it. If you don’t, say the width is unknown and ask whether an onsite look is required.
Don’t assume weekend access, overnight parking, or a loading dock. If the community wants a named contact on site, write that name into the move plan. If the older adult will not be present, record who can answer placement questions.
For a California-only household move, verify the carrier in the BHGS Household Mover License Search. BHGS regulates household movers. It is not the CSLB.
Decide what moves, stores, or stays with family
Three piles, written down: goes to the unit, goes to storage or a relative, does not travel. The mover’s scope should list only the first pile plus any storage delivery you actually booked.
Daily medicines, glasses, hearing aids, legal papers, and jewelry stay with the family. They do not ride on the truck. Label those bags with a family name, not with a medical diagnosis.
If leftover household goods need storage, that is a second destination. Don’t hide it inside “the assisted living move.” If leftover goods need haul-away, that is junk removal, not senior moving.
The senior moving service page is the booking path for the physical household move. Facility paperwork still belongs to the family and the residence.
Keep records and daily essentials with the household
Pack a first-night kit the family carries: clothes, toiletries, phone chargers, and the documents the residence asked for. The mover can deliver furniture later that day. The kit should not wait on a truck.
Photograph the origin rooms and the destination unit empty, if the community allows photos. Those photos help the family confirm what was requested. They are not a medical record.
Share one contact sheet: family lead, residence move-in coordinator, and the mover’s day-of number from the estimate. Everyone should have the same elevator window and the same keep list.
City curb rules still apply when the truck is on a public street. The City of San Diego prohibits double parking, sidewalk parking, and blocking a driveway. Posted signs win. Private campus roads follow the community’s instructions.
Compare the same senior moving scope in writing
Send every candidate the same packet: origin address, residence address, keep list, items the family will carry, elevator notes, and requested placement rooms. If one company is quoting a whole-house downsize and another is quoting a one-bedroom delivery, you are not comparing an assisted living move.
Ask the mover to put these items in writing:
- The keep list used for the estimate
- Packing, disassembly, and placement included or excluded
- Residence access conditions the quote assumed
- Who is on site to direct furniture placement
- How extras get approved if the keep list changes
- The legal company name and household mover license details
Read BHGS consumer information before you sign. Master Movers San Diego matches families with independent licensed movers. The brand does not operate the residence and does not perform the move.
